The dead have been waiting for her…

Addison Beckett tries hard to pretend she’s normal, but she’s far from it. Since she was six years old, she’s seen the world around her unraveling, as if someone is pulling a thread from a sweater and it’s all slowly coming undone. When she ignores it, it goes away, so that’s what she does.
Enter her arrogant-but-hot professor Asher Green. He knows all about her special brand of crazy. In fact, he might be just as nuts as she is. Asher insists that the dead from a parallel dimension are trying to possess the living in this one. And since Addison seems to be the only one who can see these “wraiths,” she just might be the key to saving the world.
Addison wants nothing to do with Asher or his secret society, The Mortal Machine. But as their animosity grows, she finds it harder and harder to ignore the chemistry between them. And when she discovers that Machine laws forbid her from touching him, she realizes that’s all she wants to do.
Stop the wraiths. Break the rules. Save the world. All in a day’s work.
Normal was overrated, anyway.

Interview

What is currently on your nightstand our e-reader just itching to be read?
That’s a hard question to answer at the moment. I read on my Kindle, and it very recently went for a flying leap into a solid object. Sadly, it didn’t survive. On the bright side, I did get a new one, however I haven’t loaded anything but my own work on it for editing purposes. My next to-buy will probably be the next in the Kate Daniels series. Love me some Curran.

What is your go to cure for writers block?
I don’t get writes block often, but when it does come to visit, I work on another story. If that doesn’t do it, I hang up the laptop for a few days and then revisit the piece with new eyes. It seems my mind does its best work while focused on some mundane task, like dishes or laundry. If only all problems were solved that easily.

Where do you find your Inspiration?
From absolutely everywhere, and it’s usually a surprise. In the rain. A sound in the night. Somebody’s laugh. A name. The world is an awesome place when you take the time to step back and take it all in.

You didn't start writing fiction until 2009. Do you prefer writing fiction or nonfiction?
Before then, I hadn’t written a creative word of any kind. I’m not sure I could write nonfiction.  My imagination is a dark and stormy place, and real life often doesn’t compare to what I can dream up.

Darkside Sun involves secret organizations. What is the most intriguing real world secret organization to you?
Erm…you said real world, but the Simpsons fan in me is screaming at me to say “The Stone Cutters!” I can’t really come up with many secret organizations off the top of my head, maybe the Masons or Area 51, but I figure if I know about them, they’re not very good at keeping their secret.

Did you base any of Darkside Sun's secret society "The Mortal Machine" on any real secret organizations?
I didn’t have anything but my own crazy imagination in play while assembling the Mortal Machine world. It’s kind of a mash-up of Men in Black meets The Sixth Sense meets the Matrix, even though I wasn’t consciously thinking about any of those while I was writing. The mind is a mysterious beast, isn’t it?

Darkside Sun also deals with the paranormal. Are you a believer?
It depends on what aspect of the paranormal we’re talking about. Do I believe in ghosts? That people’s souls stick around after they die and retain their memories and can think? No, I don’t believe either of those things. I’m not really sure what happens when we die, maybe our energy just returns to the earth if the scientist in me is doing the answering.
As for the question of whether or not we’re alone in the universe? I find it hard to believe this gigantic mass of space and planets only coughed up us humans and nothing else. There has to be someone or something out there.  I love to wonder what/who it might be.

Have you ever encountered the paranormal world or seen something nobody else can see? (Including ghosts and wraiths)
Something used to happen to me when I was a kid living in our old farm house. When I knew my mom was in bed, I’d hear somebody tromping around up there. When I went up to make sure nothing was wrong, Mom would be sound asleep. I’m sure it was just the house settling or the wind or something, but it scared the bajeepers out of me when I was little.

Addison is a strong female protagonist. What traits of hers do you hope make an impact on your readers?
I want Addison to be the poster child for the idea that courage isn’t something you’re born with, but something you find when you need it most. Even the smallest, meekest person can change the world if they choose to step up when it counts.

And finally publishing a book is a big deal! What do you do to celebrate the release of one of your novels?
Other than hoot and holler like a total loon, I usually indulge in a yummy butter tart. Most of my American friends probably won’t know what that is, so I’ll explain. Fill up a pastry shell with a filling made in a saucepan with brown sugar, butter, and usually a few raisins or nuts. The best ones are a little runny even after they set. Nom nom. I need to finish my next book, and fast!
