Review: Darkridge Hall

Darkridge Hall was a great little mystery/ supernatural thriller reminiscent of the old Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys novels or R.L. Stein.

SYNOPSIS:

An evil lurks in the depths of Darkridge Hall, and Andy, a new student at Kransten Academy, is about to meet it face to face.

When threatening, shadowy figures appear outside his dorm room window, Andy decides to solve the mystery of just who or what they are. But those same shadows may be responsible for the strange deaths that have been occurring in the town of Bethlehem, Maine over the past several decades.

As Andy, his teacher Mark Harris and police chief Charles Buck struggle to put the pieces together, they soon realize that the answer may come too late for them to stop the malevolent power behind it all.

REVIEW:

Michael K. Rose is an expert story teller and weaves a thrilling tale of mystery and ancient magic in Darkridge Hall. His descriptions are vivid and you can easily picture every scene as you are reading.  The Egyptian mythology that is spread out through the novel is wonderful and would open the door to Egyptian History if readers are not already familiar with it.

I enjoyed how Darkridge Hall was told from an omniscient view point and checked in on different characters throughout the novel. Rose keeps the story exciting as we see how the evil that has infected the school is affecting different people within the novel.

I would suggest Darkridge Hall for anyone looking for a good book to read that doesn't require too much attention. Perfect for the beach or on an airplane.

My only qualm with Darkridge Hall is that is labeled as a young adult novel. Although there are a couple of adult situations where beer and weed is mentioned the writing is a little bit simple for a Young Adult novel, in my opinion. I think it would be more accurate to describe this as a Middle Grade novel.

RATING: 3/5
